It existed for almost two hundred years (1119\/20-1312), but curiosity about it and its knights has spanned centuries. Men of religion and warfare combined their prayer life with the military art, in particular defensive warfare with the purpose of protecting the holy places in the Holy Land and the pilgrims coming from the farthest European lands.
